"Kia hora te marino, Kia whakapapa pounamu te moana
Hei huarahi mā tātou i te rangi nei, Aroha atu, Aroha mai,
Tātou i a tātou katoa...hui e! Tāiki e!
May peace be widespread, may the sea be like greenstone,
A pathway for us all this day
Let us show respect for each other, for one another,
Bind us...all...together!
TE WHĀNAU ĀIO
Guardianship, Protection of Native Origins
Te Whanau Āio are the Māori Ambassadors who hold sovereignty at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
Te Whānau Āio are the Māori Ambassadors who hold the Auckland Museum Māori Cultural Experience - Living Tāonga.
It is an experience created with the intention of protecting Māori practices and principles from being harmed via cultural appropriation and continued colonisation. This intention is shared via cultural initiations specific to Te Whānau Āio with the role of educating rather than entertaining. This intention is to guide respect for native and indigenous teachings enveloping more understanding and consideration rather than the unconscious practice of cultural appropriation and
privilege.
The group are direct descendants of the Sacred regalia and treasures within the Museum and stand as protectors and guardians of their forefathers.
With two daily experiences for guests and featured theatre pieces such as "Kia Maumahara - A Moment in Time" and "Wai Taketake", Āio hold as balance keepers; we can only hold balance if some are willing to risk their truth in order to protect it.
